The presentations should be no less than 10 minutes a piece (thought longer is certainly acceptable). Norbert Herber, a friend and colleague who teaches in the Dept of Telecom at Indiana University – Bloomington, is teaching a 1 credit class on April 22, 23, nd 24 called Sounds, Images + Interactivity. Introduction & Background

It is essential for interactive designers and developers to have several channels of communication with their audience. Traditionally, the visual channel has been given the most attention. The recipe for immersion has relied on graphical wizardry in favor of creating an experience that is visually compelling and engaging. What is missing is this same kind of attention and focus on the audio components of an interactive experience. In the whole of interactive media this channel has been largely neglected. The audio elements and overall aural design of the interactive experience have not been fully considered.

Only through the thoughtful planning of interactive sound structures will there be the kind of audio and graphic synergy that enables the immersive experience to reach its full potential. This course aims to explore the concepts and techniques that bind the picture + sound relationship in an interactive environment.

Course Information

An understanding of audio and its relationship with images is essential to the success of an interactive production. The course will approach the material from both theoretical and practical perspectives. To discover the intricacies of this relationship, students will study the following topics:

audio-only media: radio theater and other spoken word productions
film music: role of music in cinema and film music techniques

Though interactive media is relatively young, there are traditions that are vital to the field. While traditional media provides a foundation for the picture + sound relationship, it is also essential to understand how audio is used in contemporary interactive media. Students will consider:

audio in computer games (classic and contemporary)
audio in CD-ROM based media
audio on the Internet

Careful study and consideration must also go with practical application for a full understanding of the interactive audio development process. Students will have the opportunity to work with contemporary digital audio and media authoring tools to practice implementing the techniques they study and develop individually. The experience of creating interactive sound schemes will bring their studies full-circle from

analysis to implementation.

Objectives

Introduce students to the power of audio as a means of communication and storytelling, and allow students to explore the interplay between sound and on-screen images

Provide students with a framework for thoughtful consideration of audio in an interactive environment Explore various techniques of implementing an interactive audio design concept in the context of an interactive media production

Recommended Skill Set

Students are expected to have a working knowledge of digital audio, and contemporary tools for computer-based recording and editing. Musical training or the ability to sing/play an instrument can be helpful, though not necessary. Students should be familiar with Flash-based multimedia development and have at least an intermediate-level knowledge of ActionScript or similar OOP language.

Summer Class: The Social History of Digital Games (TC391)

If anyone is interested, I’m teaching a class this summer called The Social History of Digital Games (TC391). Here is the descriptions:

In 1952, A.S. Douglas wrote his PhD degree at the University of Cambridge on Human-Computer interaction. Douglas created the first graphical computer game - a version of Tic-Tac-Toe. The game was programmed on an EDSAC vacuum-tube computer, which had a cathode ray tube display. The rest, as they say, is history. 50 years later, video games are a multi billion dollar industry, and have become worthy of mainstream attention and scholarly study.
The Social History of Digital Games is an introductory survey course designed to provide student with an opportunity to explore the foundations, development, and current state of interactive entertainment as well as the interactive entertainment industry. The course will take a socio-historical approach to the subject, exploring not just the lineage of game technology, genres, and trends, but the impact that the industry had on society and vice versa.

I would just like to remind everyone that you’ve got your third and final Creative Concept due on Monday. For those who haven’t looked at the schedule lately, here is the description:

Creative Concept Day: envision an interactive application for an everyday consumer device (fridge, gas pump, toaster, etc.). When creating your application, build in a network component of some kind (so that your application includes communication with other devices in the area or other non-local systems). Remember, the more creative, the better.

Final Project Options...

As we’ve talked about many times during the semester thus far, the Final Project is not only group based (i.e. the Design Teams), but also the culmination of the course itself. While the point of the Final Project itself is to author a creative interactive system of some sort that takes into account the principles that we’ve discussed throughout the semester, the actual form that the Final Project actually takes is not necessarily going to be the exact same for every design team.

So, I’ve split the possible Final Project outcomes into three options. Each Design Team can choose any one of the options:

Option 1: Functioning Interactive System

The Design Team can decide to create a fully functional interactive system (in the medium of their choice for the platform of their choice). This option doesn’t require the same supporting documentation that either Option 2 or Option 3 does.

Option 2: Prototype Interactive System with “lite” Design Documentation

The Design Team can decide to create a prototype interactive system that is accompanied by a smaller design doc than is required of Option 3. The exact nature of the prototype is up to the design team. It could include a fully functional robust interactive interface (in the medium of their choice) without any actual content, or an interactive system that is partially complete (i.e. interface with one “area” of content complete). In addition, the Design Team must hand in a “lite” design document (the contents of which will be provided after the design team has handed in their Final Project Pitch).

Option 3: Robust Design Document

If the Design Team chooses, they can prototype a creative interactive system completely on paper in a very robust design document. The contents of the design doc will depend on the medium and platform of the interactive system itself, and will be provided to the design team after they’ve handed in their Final Project Pitch. Examples of what the design doc could include are a detailed market analysis, an information architecture diagram, multiple storyboard prototypes, digital wire frame prototypes, audience profile, and detailed design strategy justification.

Ultimately, the option that the design team chooses is completely up to them, and will probably hinge on the amount of amount and types of skills present in each member of the team.

Ok, here is the list of White Paper topics by team. While some of you expressed desire to do specific topics, some of you did not. Those teams who didn’t get in contact with me got a topic arbitrarily assigned to them:

White Paper Topics...

Hey folks, Well, we're over the mid semester hump, and hurtling towards the end of the semester. Beyond the Final Project Pitch and Final Project, each design team also has to collaboratively produce a white paper on one specific topic. Just to refresh your memory, here is the description of the assignment (drawn from the course website):

White paper (10%): Each team will be assigned one specific technology upon which they'll have to produce a white paper. Each white paper is a group effort, and as such, must be produced by the entire team. When submitted, the white paper will be made available on the course website so that the rest of the students in the class can benefit from the knowledge. The white papers are expected to be highly professional (both in presentation and in writing).

Give the fact that the due date for the White Paper is the 15th of April, its time to start handing out the topics (as well as some guidelines for the various topics). The topics are first come first served. Each team can decide on which topic they want. I’ll give you folks until Wednesday @ noon to stake your claim on a specific topic. If any team hasn’t made their choice by then, I’ll simply assign a topic. so, here they are:

RSS: Taken by Team 3 he White Paper should include an introduction, a history of the technology’s development, a detailed discussion of how it works (including examples of code if warranted), a detailed discussion of how the technology is used, and discussion of the future of the technology. The White Paper could also be enhanced by case studies of how RSS has been used to create or enhance existing interactive applications.

CSS (Cascading Style Sheets): Taken by Team 7 The White Paper should include an introduction, a history of the development of CSS (as well as a discussion of the reasons for its development), a detailed discussion of how CSS works (from a technical standpoint), examples of CSS code, real world examples of the use of CSS, a detailed discussion of what CSS brings to web design, and a discussion of the future of CSS.

XML (eXtensible Markup Language): The White Paper should include an introduction, a history of the technology’s development, a detailed discussion of how XML works (with examples of code), how XML is used, and a discussion of the technology’s future.

Wireless (802.11x and bluetooth): Taken by Team 5 The White Paper should include an introduction, a discussion of the history of 802.11x and bluetooth, how the technology works, examples of its use, a discussion of the technology’s future.

The Semantic Web: Taken by Team 1 The White Paper should include an introduction, a discussion of the technology's development, a detailed discussion of the Semantic Web’s underlying technological framework, the reasons for the technology's development, and the future of the Semantic Web.

XSL/XSLT (eXtensible Style Sheet Language): The White Paper should include an introduction, a discussion of the technology’s development, a discussion of the difference between CSS and XSL, a detailed discussion of how the technology works (with examples of code), and a discussion of the technology’s future.

Web Standards: The White Paper should include an introduction, a detailed discussion for the reasons the increasing widespread need for web standards (as well as its strengths), a detailed discussion of the underlying technology of Web Standard, and examples of code (HTML vs. XHTML/CSS). The White Paper would be greatly enhanced by real world case studies of Web Standards.

Accessibility: Taken by Team 6 The White Paper should include an introduction, a discussion of the principles of accessibility, background history, a detailed discussion of the the different accessibility standards and initiatives, and a discussion of the future of accessibility.

Topic of your Choice: If your team can come up with an additional topic other than those listed here, and outlines the topics covered (and convinces me of the topic’s suitability) by noon on Wednesday, you are free to write your White Paper on a topic of your choice.

Beyond the specifics outlined above, the White Papers need to be a collaborative effort of all team members, be very professionally presented, and very professionally written (I would strongly suggest that a draft of each design team’s white paper be taken to the Writing Center for review). All outside sources must be cited consistently and properly. The White Paper must be delivered in PDF format to the instructor by 5pm on Friday the 15th of April.

As each team stakes their claim on a topic, I will update this list accordingly.

We are looking for a web designer/developer who might be interested in part-time work to develop the overall design of our web site for the Pileus* Project, a multidisciplinary project on climate variablity which is centered in the climatology lab in the Natural Sciences building.
Web Design skills include:
Working knowledge of Dreamweaver MX, Photoshop, Illustrator or similar, imovie, audio input (itunes or garage band?); some camcorder experience desired, but not necessary. We will also be looking for a Flash designer, who has experience with databases.

Using an Aggregator to Read TC391's RSS Feed

Don’t know what RSS is? Don’t know how to aggregate an RSS feed? You are definitely missing out. As I’m running 3 separate course blogs this semester (and some of you are in more than one of these classes), I thought it might be helpful if I were to point you in the direction of a nice RSS/Aggregation primer.

For those who don’t know, RSS feeds automatically bring updated information straight to your desktop. You can monitor news, job listings, personals, and classifieds. More and more sites offer feeds (including all of the course blogs I’m running this semester), which you can identify by a small button that says either RSS or XML. However, if you click one of these links, you will most likely get a page full of code in your browser. To properly read the feed, you need an RSS reader.

Schedule Update...

In my eternal quest to catch up before the actual semester is finished, I’ve updated the schedule with readings for the next month and a half or so.

Also – since it looks like we’ll be doing less in the way of programming topics than I originally thought. As a result, I’m switching the Programming Pop-Quizzes over the more generic Pop Quizzes. There will still be three pop quizzes and they will still be “pop.” The only real difference is that they will cover all material in the class (both lecture and reading). In order to compensate for this change, I’m going to offer a Bonus Blog (that you can use whenever you want). All you need to do is post the blog whenever you want, and it will replace a blog that you either didn’t do or got a reduced mark on. When you do post the blog, it can be on anything you want (i.e. like any regular blog). The one thing that you must do is make sure you put Bonus Blog in the title of the entry (so that I k now its your bonus blog opposed to any other regular blog). If you don’t so this, you won’t receive credit for the blog.

Creative Concept #1

Hey folks, a few people have expressed some concern over the nature of the creative concept. This is not a major assignment. Instead its really just an exercise in creative brainstorming. One of the shortcomings of the DMAT/Interactive classes at MSU is that they are bound to a specific program – you learn Flash or you learn Final Cut Pro or you learn Director. The point of this class (and, more specifically, the Creative Concept exercises) is to unshackle you from the limitations of any given program – both in terms of your skill and in terms of the abilities of the program itself. If you start out with the goal of creating an interactive application without being boxed into a specific authoring program, what you can envision something much more interesting than you’d probably normally been able to. From there, you figure out how to do it.

So, the point of the Creative Concept assignment is to brainstorm something interesting without having to think about how you might go about actually creating it in a given medium or with a given program. Just start off with the simple guidelines provided, and then let your mind run free.

All you need to do is write the idea up (about a page), and then present it in class on Monday. The more you put into the assignment (both in terms of the writeup and in terms of the presentation), the better your grade.

If anyone needs anything specific for the presentation on Monday, give me a yell.

MSU alum and 20 year entertainment industry veteran Rob Martyn will talk about the current state of the children’s software industry, it’s glorious past, and what it may take to put magic back in to this industry, what the future could hold and how to get there.

About the Speaker

Rob Martyn has been in the interactive and online industries ever since his outstanding education in the College of Communications at Michigan State University. His career reflects areas of pioneering as well as areas of commercial success. He worked at North America's first commercial online service at Knight-Ridder Newspapers, managed the first commercial persistent world environment at America Online, and produced Living Books for Broderbund, one of the seminal products in early multimedia. In his 20 year career, he has managed production organizations responsible for some of the most highly branded products in the game industry, including EA Sports, The Sims and SimCity. He's currently engaged in trying to infuse magic back into children's software.
